Balance Sheet and Perspectives

The Bourse du travail at rue Charlot in Paris has been occupied since 2 May 2008.

Whereas the occupation of the Bourse du travail in Paris by the Sans-papiers workers is officially threatened by eviction by the highest authority of management of the Bourse, it really seems that the time has come to ask oneself one simple question: what is the balance sheet of this struggle?

Recent racist assaults in Rethymno and Laconia, Greece

A snapshot of how everyday diffuse racism operates in tourist- or agriculture-economy provinces in Greece forcing immigrants to keep heads down.

Between 12 and 14 of April in Rethymno, Crete, some racist scum attacked high school pupils both of Greek and Albanian origin who were hanging out together in the street.

Warm weekend in Athens: protests, street battles and occupations

The first weekend of spring has been another warm one for Athens with protest marches, street battles, and occupations over a variety of social issues.

On Friday 6/3 afternoon protestors occupied the metro/ISAP station of Attiki a central transit station between the two urban rail systems in solidarity to K. Kouneva. All ticket machines were disabled so that transport could be rendered free of charge. Despite propaganda from the megaphones of ISAP, damage was done to the station.

Learning from experience: To win is to fight to the end

This is a short interview looking at the experience of a migrant worker who has become a labour activist, and was involved in the successful self-organised strike by the Schroders cleaners in October 2008.

Alberto has been working as a cleaner in London and fighting for better wages and conditions for over 10 years.

Like many from the immigrant community, he came to the UK to study and to look for a better life. Soon after his studies, he fell into the ranks of many immigrants doing low paid work.

Haunt of Migrants in Exarcheia, Athens, attacked with hand-grenade

On the night of February 24 the Haunt of Migrants on Tsamadou Street in Exarcheia (a social centre for migrants) was attacked while an assembly of the Association of Conscientious Objectors was taking place inside.

A hand-grenade was thrown from outside. Luckily the building’s window was shut and double-glazed - the first layer of the window broke but the hand-grenade bounced off and exploded outside.

What follows is a statement issued by the Network for Social and Political Rights, also housed in the same building.

Demonstrations in Milan against anti-migrant laws

Last weekend in Milan 30,000 people demonstrated with CGIL union against xenophobic anti-migrant laws recently introduced in Italy. These laws have been proposed with the usual rationale of more security for citizens.

The Italian parliament have recently issued laws such as one which will allow doctors to denounce patients without proper immigration documents. Another law will put immigrants in a detention centre without having committed any crime and Berlusconi has also recently approved a decree (apparently “against-rape”) that legalises rounding up immigrants.

Energy wildcats continue to spread across the UK

Mounted police stand by as workers protest outside the Lindsey oil refinery in North Lincolnshire.

The wave of wildcat strike action that has swept across the UK escalated today as hundreds more workers walked out in the protest at the exclusion of British workers from jobs.

Contract workers from the Sellafield nuclear site in Cumbria, the Heysham nuclear power station in Lancashire and a site at Staythorpe, in Nottinghamshire, joined the unofficial action over the hiring of Italian and Portuguese workers, which local unemployed British workers were unable to apply for on a Lincolnshire power station project.

Hundreds of migrants break out of Italian detention centre

Migrants detained at the Lampedusa centre

700 migrants have broken down fences and escaped from the Lampedusa detention centre on the Mediterranean island in protest at the conditions there.

The camp was built for 850 detainees but currently houses over 2000. The UN recently urged the Italian government to address the "difficult humanitarian situation." After their escape the migrants converged on the town centre where they staged a protest, shouting "freedom" and "help us." The mayor of described it as Lampedusa "a very tense situation."
