Science museum staff vote to strike
National science museum staff have voted overwhelmingly to strike over pay and plans to close the civil service pension scheme to new members.
Members of the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) working for the National Museum of Science and Industry (NMSI) are furious that a below inflation pay offer has been imposed on them at a successful time for the museum.
Valuation office staff vote over strike action
2,200 members of the Public and Commercial Services Union working for the Valuation Office Agency began a ballot for strike action over below inflation pay on 30 January.
The ballot for industrial action short of a strike and a one day strike follows a below inflation pay offer with cost of living increases of no more than 1. 9%. The offer sees the most experienced staff receive 1. 25% and those at the start of their pay band receive 1. 9%.
UK: Public service strike enters second day
70,000 workers at Jobcentres, benefits offices, the Pension Service and Child Support Agency (CSA) are on strike for a second day over the imposition of a below inflation pay offer.
The two day strike called by PCS members working for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), follows the imposition of a below inflation pay offer which sees the lowest paid receiving increases which take their wage to only 24 pence above the minimum wage and approximately 40% of staff set to receive a 0% pay increase next year.
PCS members vote for national strike
Members of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) have overwhelmingly voted in favour of the union’s proposals for national industrial action aimed at resolving the ongoing national dispute in the civil service and related bodies over job cuts, below inflation pay and privatisation.
68% of members voting in the national consultative ballot voted for national strike action as part of the union’s campaign, which has already seen two strongly supported national one day strikes this year. The result is a clear demonstration of PCS members resolve to reach a fair settlement with senior civil service management and the government over jobs, pay and conditions.
London civil servants on strike
Members of the Public and Commercial Services Union are going on strike today (November 1st) in Sheffield against the compulsory transfer of ten staff who worked for the former Department for Education and Skills (DfES) at Caxton House into the private sector.
Up to 1,800 members working for the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS), will be taking part in the action.
Members will be picketing outside Caxton House on Tothill St, London today from 12pm-2pm with members in Sheffield, Darlington and Runcorn also taking part in the strike.
Unions angry at below inflation pay offer
The government is to hold down public-sector pay increases to about 2% over the next three years, provoking the fury of trade unions, which have already been threatening a "winter of discontent" unless the government relaxes pay norms in the next round of negotiations.
The pre-budget report commits the Treasury to "public pay settlements consistent with the government's achievement of the government's inflation target of 2%" and urges departments to ensure "total pay bills represent value for money and are affordable within departments' overall expenditure plans".
Civil servants begin ballot for strike action
Members of PCS working across the civil and public service have begun voting in a ballot for further national civil service strike action in an escalation of the union's campaign against job cuts, below inflation pay and privatisation.
The ballot involving 270,000 members working in over 200 different government departments, agencies and non departmental public bodies follows two strongly supported one-day national civil service strikes this year.
PCS consults civil servants over strike action
280,000 civil servants will be consulted on a ballot for further strike action during August. This is likely to mean more strikes over public sector pay in the Autumn.

Up to 200,000 civil and public servants in mayday strike
UK civil and public servants across 200 government departments, agencies and non-departmental bodies will be taking part in a second one day national strike today (1 May) in an escalation in a dispute over job cuts, pay and privatisation.
The second one day strike called by the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) will hit a range of services including courts, passports, tax, Jobcentres, galleries and driving tests. The May Day stoppage comes as the government continues to axe more than 100,000 civil and public servants, insist on below inflation pay rises and plough on with privatisation.
