Strikes at seven UK airports have been called of by the Unite and PCSU unions.

Submitted by Mike Harman on January 3, 2008

The strikes would have taken place for 24 hours on the 7th and 14th, then 48 hours on the 17th January, and were to involve clerical, security, firefighters and maintenance staff.

Both unions called off the strikes after BAA agreed to "proper consultation" on proposed changes to the final salary scheme. The deal included an agreement to close the scheme to new staff. Changes for existing pension members will require further consultation, however the creation of a two-tier cheme is likely to reduce opposition to future changes, as workers eligible for the current scheme become a smaller proportion of the workforce.
