Tension rose to new levels in the Greek capital last week when two bodies of public security, the firemen and the riot police clashed in the center of Athens during the former's national campaign to protest against the non-implementation of promises made by the Ministry of Interior. Last year, the ministry promised permanent employment for 5,500 firefighters across the country by April 1st 2009.
Warm weekend in Athens: protests, street battles and occupations
The first weekend of spring has been another warm one for Athens with protest marches, street battles, and occupations over a variety of social issues.
On Friday 6/3 afternoon protestors occupied the metro/ISAP station of Attiki a central transit station between the two urban rail systems in solidarity to K. Kouneva. All ticket machines were disabled so that transport could be rendered free of charge. Despite propaganda from the megaphones of ISAP, damage was done to the station.

On the night of February 24 the Haunt of Migrants on Tsamadou Street in Exarcheia (a social centre for migrants) was attacked while an assembly of the Association of Conscientious Objectors was taking place inside.
A hand-grenade was thrown from outside. Luckily the building’s window was shut and double-glazed - the first layer of the window broke but the hand-grenade bounced off and exploded outside.
