India: Mumbai taxi drivers strike against violence

Taxi drivers in Mumbai launched the wildcat on Thursday after the offices of the Bombay Taxi Union were attacked.

The strike which involved most of Mumbai's 55,000 taxi drivers was called off after two hours, after ministers made assurances over security. State home secretary Chitkala Zutshi also attempted to downplay the violence: "All miscreants will be dealt with severely. We mean to maintain law and order.

France: striking taxi drivers protest and block roads

Taxi drivers are launching strikes and protests against government plans to liberalise the sector.

In Paris hundreds of taxis have occupied the place de la République to protest against the report. In Marseille taxi drivers have picketed roads going into the city, causing long tailbacks. In the small town of Dieppe 16 of the town's 17 taxis were striking. The strike is also being well-observed in Cannes and other towns and cities across France.

Strikes and protests in China

Bus drivers have been on strike, while the death of a blogger prompted protests and a taxi drivers protest in Hubei proviince.

A protest against a landfill site which is expanding into urban areas in Tianmen, Hubei province led to violence as protestors were attacked by Chengguang (City Management Officers).

Wei Wenhua, filming the incident from his car on his mobile phone was targeted and killed by the Chengguang during the incident.

Transport strikes across Italy

Italy's biggest transport strike in 25 years forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights, idled trains, anchored ships, and stalled buses across the country on Friday.

Aero-news.net reported that Italian carrier Alitalia canceled 217 domestic and international flights before a four-hour walkout by pilots, flight crew and ground staff beginning at 11 am. Air One, Italy's number two carrier, only guaranteed nine flights there.

Cab drivers caused gridlock in central Rome on Wednesday in a dispute over liberalisation and rates.

Hundreds of white cabs blocked traffic at Rom'es central Piazza Venezia while drivers protested in front of the nearby City Hall. The strike was called by the taxi drivers' union after it abandoned talks with the mayor.

Cab drivers have staged several strikes in recent months in opposition to government plans to liberalize the service and grant more licenses, and for rates increases.

Cabbies at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport went on a five-hour wildcat strike Monday that ended when airport officials agreed to consider a list of their grievances.

"There's only so much you can do to people. We can't take it any more," said D.O. Nwajei of the Atlanta Taxi Cab Association Inc., whose membership tops 1,500. "We've been pushed to the wall." The cabbies said they were frustrated with working conditions and what some labelled police harassment.

New York: Cab strike on the cards

Up to 7,000 taxi drivers in New York are scheduled to stage a two-day strike on September 5-6.

Cabbies opposed to plans to install credit card and video devices in cabs across the city’s fleet are planning to stage a two-day stoppage. The hi-tech video screens, which the city authorities want to have installed in every yellow cab, will allow passengers to watch TV, make payments with credit cards and watch the progress of their cab journey via a global satellite link.

Italian taxi drivers back on strike

Almost a year after a wave of wildcat strikes, cab drivers in Italy struck again yesterday against liberalisation of the industry.

Xinhuanet.com reported that Italian taxi drivers resumed strike action Tuesday to protest against government plans to deregulate the sector.

Taxi union officials said some 25,000 cabbies were taking part in the one-day stoppage which caused havoc as travelers left stranded at airports, stations and taxi ranks.
