UCU to ballot on strike action at Nottingham Trent University
The University and College Union branch at Nottingham Trent University is to ballot its members on strike action following the formal de-recognition of the local UCU branch by university managers.
Nottingham Trent University (NTU) managers have formally de-recognised the University and College Union's branch after ongoing attempts by the university to amend the union's recognition agreement with the university.
Psychologists protest against involvement in torture
Over 400 psychologists in the United States are currently withholding dues to the American Psychological Association over its failure to explicitly condemn all forms of torture.
Recently, the American Psychological Association (APA) passed a new resolution reaffirming its position against torture as defined in Article l of the United Nations Declaration and Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

Lecturers at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) warned today that they may take strike action over an ongoing row about how the university negotiates with the branch.
The university has formally terminated recognition of UCU in what has been described as a 'direct attack on independent trade unionism' by the union.
Queens University pursuing compulsory redundancies
Queens University in Belfast is for the first time ever attempting to make staff compulsorily redundant. Following a meeting with UCU, these plans were dropped from the proposal to be tabled at a later date.
For the first time ever, Queens University is attempting to introduce compulsory redundancies for staff. Normally, voluntary means are used to resolve staffing issues, but Queens senior-management were attempting to rush-through the compulsory redundancy plan tomorrow at Standing Committee meeting.

Higher education is going through significant transformations on an international, or at least European, level. The UK is not immune to these changes. Whilst there have been various small protests in places around the country to resist these changes, no major local campaign has existed as of yet. Sussex not 4 Sale was born out of this context.
April 24 – hundreds of thousands to walk out
On Thursday April 24 thousands of civil servants, coastguards, council workers, FE lecturers and charity workers will join a national teachers strike of 200,000.
Employer attacks on workers' pay is the main issue at stake.
Teachers in the NUT are walking out over their pay deal which was supposed to be revised when inflation rose, but the government refused: effectively cutting their wages.

Since 2004 South African cities have been convulsed by a series of municipal revolts organised from shack settlements. They have most often taken the form of blockading roads with burning barricades and have generally targeted municipal party councillors. Across the country many of the more militant settlements have refused electoral politics and declared 'No Land, No House, No Vote'.
University strike in Egypt
Professors throughout Egypt took part in one of the biggest university strikes last Sunday to renew demands for better pay and working conditions.
Simultaneous protests were held at 1pm outside university administrative buildings. Some 200 university professors attended the protest at Cairo University.
More strikes expected as Greece passes pension reform
Greek unions promise to continue protests against the government's pension reforms, passed on Thursday.
The pension reform raises the retirement age for women to 65 and workers in hazardous industries will have to work an extra two years. Many accuse the conservative government of going back on pre-election promises not to cut pension rights.
