Studying Rammohun Roy and Karl Marx together and today

The ongoing cycles of industrialization of the world economy continue to be accompanied by cyclical rise and decline of interrelated political ideologies of imperial and colonial liberalisms and marxisms. This paper proposes that the rise and decline of these ideologies need to be studied in their interconnections: for every society separately, as well as globally. From South Asia such studies may begin with interrelated studies of the texts of Karl Marx (1818-1883) and Rammohun Roy (1772-1833). Roy was one of the makers of the political culture of Victorian England where Karl Marx lived and worked for decades. Such studies are necessary for other areas. The task is to engage with the concrete histories of all forms of imperial and colonial liberal and socialist aspirations.
