So lately I've been removing much more spam and banning spam accounts on a daily basis than what's been normal for what seems like the last few years. Is there a particular reason for that? Does it have something to do with Mollom being removed? Did Mollom remove some spam automatically?
Not that it's a massive issue, at the most like 5-10 spam messages and like 5 accounts to be banned so it doesn't take a lot of time, but thought I'd flag it.
I don't know, but I like that
I don't know, but I like that one person who introduced themselves on the Welcome thread and subtly advertised their truck tires over like a three-month period. Pretty funny the effort he/she went through. It's great when they say something like "Really liked the article", followed by pornographic links or something, as if the first part is going to prevent them from getting banned. Probably just bots or something, don't know exactly how spammers work.

Yes. Mollom shut down - we installed a couple of other spam blocking modules, but they don't pick up quite as much. You should see a button to 'mark as spam' now - that will help the new spam module to learn what is and isn't spam a bit.
K, I'll start doing that.

I can't actually see that, I can see the "spam" button which has been there for ages, but I thought that was the manual on, not linked to the new spam blocking module. Or is that now linked to the new module?
(N.b. for me it doesn't say "Mark as Spam", it just says "spam" next to "quote", "edit" et cetera, like it has for the past few years)

That's because I didn't set the permissions up right, try now?

Yes, I also only have the "spam" and not 'marked as spam" button.

still nothing for me, but I guess it might be a caching issue? I will check again in a couple of hours

I've noticed a bit more
I've noticed a bit more recently, for ages there was hardly any, or it was the more long-term stuff.
I have a "spam" button a "not spam" not button underneath (can't click on it) and a "mark as spam" button.
Do we just mark as spam and let it do its thing or do e delete it?

Yeah, should we still delete? I also see sometimes that spam messages have been unpublished instead of deleted, should they be left up (I usually delete unpublished spam as well)?
I think 1. mark as spam 2.
I think 1. mark as spam 2. delete would be ideal.
Thanks for doing this by the way.
K, I'll keep on deleting.

I have it now. Thanks

I haven't noticed any more
I haven't noticed any more than usual. In the past, the entire 'Recent Posts' tracker would be full of spam threads. Haven't seen an onslaught like that in a while.
are we all supposed to to see
are we all supposed to to see a mark as spam button or is that just an admin/mod thing?
It's an admin/mod only thing.

just admins. However all users should be able to see the "spam" button, and clicking this on spam posts will help us keep the site clean
I just cleared 80-odd spam
I just cleared 80-odd spam posts from the audio anarchy thread, there were so many it was unreadable.
Are posts automatically unpublished when a user is blocked? (or can they be?)
As things stand quite a few spammers had made multiple posts on that thread. It would be quicker to ban them as a spammer and automatically unpublish all the posts.

when I looked at that, to me it appeared that the spam posts were already all unpublished (they were shaded), so they were only visible to you because of your admin permissions.
Thanks very much for doing it

I concur with Jef, it's pretty annoying especially when it's a lot. The again, I guess it's better than just leaving the spam up.

Has it been considered to authenticate users before they can post (either a one-time thing when they register, or make it where new members have to do a robot test before commenting)?
@zugzwang we already have
@zugzwang we already have email registration and some anti-robot stuff but a significant number of spammers are real people.
