I think 'political' and 'holiday' are contradictory but aside from that the people of Savai'i would be able to teach one alot. I would like to visit Gaza. I have been to Gaza beach but never visited Gaza city.
No traveling with lil'uns is good, people and families in particular feel a lot more at ease with your jolly foreigner ass when you have kids, you get to see the world through the non-tourist lens. Once you get over the fact that the holiday ain't about you.
I'd say go slow wherever you go, maybe choose places that you already have connections with, I spent two weeks in a homestead in Fiji, it wasn't an anarchist community at all but 90% self sufficient in terms of produce, everday after school all the village kids would come to play with 'their white friends' their words not mine. Just seeing my kids running around free in the lagoon wi t'uther young uns gave me a lot of hope.
Just need to find an autnomous lagoon that adults can run in too n we're good.
South America to learn for a year then home to organise. I have met a lot of people from South America who had a wicked take on the world and I want to learn more about that.
Working holiday / educational trip whichever. They used to be quite common here in the late 90s / early 2000s for activists. We certainly benefited from travelling organisers, activists and anarchists during that time. Many travelling activists played key roles in the anti-globalisation, anti-war, anti-ge and animal liberation movements at the time.
I went part way around the world during this time but was in a feral hitchhiking OE mode at the time. I bused past the pots and pans fights, unemployment struggles and factory occupations in Argentina (couldn't believe how little traffic there was on a 11 lane road), hitchhiked past the World Social Forum in Brazil and didn't even think of looking up anarchists in Montevideo or Sao Paulo. I wish I could go back in time!
At some stage I'll be at home with the kids for a while so we were thinking we could just make the road our home for a while. Last chance for a long time to do it again.
I'd visit Gaza for the food; Jesus and Mary, the food's lousy in Israel (with a few notable exceptions: chopped herring on Haifa beach and the Yemeni restaurant in Tel Aviv).
