Perhaps more significant are the efforts of James Callaghan to do the same.

Just a bit of trivia.

A fellow postie, an ex-Coldstream Guard, was deployed as a guard at Spandau and although forbidden to talk to Hess, he did give him an apple, which was strictly against orders.

I have a vague memory however that the joint committee responsible for Hess continued imprisonment and decided his fate once met and the Russian delegation failed to turn up. With no-one to veto it, they nevertheless did not authorise his release so another of the of the 4 Powers shared the Soviet attitude.
