bell hooks (1952 – 2021) was born into a working class family in a small town in Kentucky. She published around 40 books ranging from childrens’ stories and cultural commentary to poetry and essays on race, class and gender, becoming known as one of the best US radical writers of recent times.
This pamphlet compiles her classic essay Understanding Patriarchy and transcripts of three interviews from 1994, 2011 and 2015. In these interviews, hooks discusses the nature of the patriarchy, the growth of white supremacy in the US, the need for love, the role of humour, spirituality and intersectionality, and the difficuties of remaining relevant when immersed in the academic world. Hooks’ anger, warmth and humanity is evident in these interviews, and reading them makes you feel very annoyed that she’s dead, and you are never going to have the chance to talk to her in person.
Given that, I’m afraid this is as good as it gets. Her writing is pretty damn cool, though.
