In this chapter, the first of Power Without Responsibility (2003), James Curran charts the history of the UK Press from explicit state control to corporate censorship, refuting those such as Francis Williams and just recently Alan Rusbridger who claim that 'advertising [has] set the British press free.'
The last segment entitled 'The press in the age of globalization' has since been revised in the sixth edition (2009).
