I'm disappointed that someone deleted the one about stretchmarks.

Today, there's a spam attack, predictably; a way of sifting out spammers through a simple quiz for new users seems pretty essential and URGENT if this site isn't going to be inundated (and we ain't seen nothing yet).

Most of the newly registered users have been spammers and people who think that a libertarian communist forum is the best place to share theories about history they thought up while on the crapper. I suggest blocking new registrations until a system can be put in place to screen out spammers. I think ABC or one of the others has a system where you have to comment on a specific thread, then await admin approval to actually be able to post.

To be fair though a lot of older posters think LibCom is a place to share theories of history that I ... I mean, they... thought up on the crapper.

But I do think a quiz or an admin check is a good way to go, and quickly too. I don't think we should block new registrations though. Just implement the new system as soon as possible.

Variation on Tojiah's suggestion: the first post of new registrations have to be subject to pre-moderation, "a system where you have to comment on a specific thread, then await admin approval to actually be able to post". Something should be done soon without all these delays and hesitations because one day, maybe soon (June 30th?) libcom will be hit by a tsunami of spam that'll drown out the rest. Don't know if it is technically very difficult to bring in this change, and I know admin have loads of other stuff to do, but long term it'll reduce their burden.

How about volunteer checkers? I'd be able to help check out postings.

There was talk about spam prevention before, I'm not in favour of the revolutionary questionnaire, but one way would be to limit new posters to 5 posts in the first 24 hours unless they pm'd a mod. Not sure if you can do that on drupal though.

Yeah, what happened yesterday? I think I banned about 40 accounts and deleted a lot of spam, but I couldn't keep up with how much was posted and how many spammers there were, and gave up...

That's right. Although we are keeping an eye on who reports posts as spam, so people who abuse it to report non-spam posts as spam can be warned and then banned if they are doing it maliciously.

that said, the best thing to do would be to click "report to mollom", then click the button to report it to mollom and delete it. That way it helps the forums stay tidy and helps improve our spam protections in future. (A mass cull of unpublished posts would be problematic, as some we have unpublished for other reasons and may like to re-publish one day)

Well looking at the introduce yourself thread, he could be a bot-agent of "Critter Nation Cages" trying to sell us sugar glider habitats...

I think they are both bots, I only haven't deleted OWen's posts because I am not 100%. Sometimes they practise with bots so that once they have made a few posts without being spotted and establishing themselves they can then spam. Doesn't seem much point here, but they do it.

You also get accounts that are really old and suddenly after 7 years start spamming, this could be because they got hacked or some seriously long term spamming.
