Know any other good post-rock acts to follow? I like most of the old guard (GY!BE, Explosions, Mogwai) along with some newer groups (La Verité, We Invented the Night, Faunts), but it seems like the genre is pretty over-saturated at this point.

Glad you liked it, as the fellow said
The man that hath no music in himself, Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils; The motions of his spirit are dull as night, And his affections dark as Erebus. Let no such man be trusted.
Cave's last lines remind me of Celan's last lines in White and Light: 'ocean mill turns, ice bright and unheard, in our eyes' [no music = withered soul (just look at the state of Isaac Newton's (and no worries, I thought you might be going to the memorial))]
1962 was a magic year for me and I’d a sudden flash back when I read that Jet Harris’ ‘Some People’ was due for re-issue next month. My pal Robin and I would dog off school and play 45s all day long, the Four Seasons ‘Sherry’, etc. What really zonked me was seeing Little Eva and she was not singing about dancing! Wow! What next Da Doo Ron Ron!
Here Bob Marley with the (to me) impossibly happy song "no more cryin', no more cryin', lord I thank you"

This is the original track that sample is from, Aegeispolis by Aphex Twin from the Selected Ambient Works album (85-92), a great album- as is 26 Mixes For Cash. The only two albums by him that I like.
I listened to 'Broadwater Farm' by Junior Delgado yesterday. Not a great tune on first listen, although in its defence 1985 was not a great year for music in the UK. Coincidentally, it was when I started work full time so it wasn't a good year for me either.
As a point of interest, the tune was banned by the authorities after the insurrection on the estate.
Never heard the song before, his ex-wife used to teach at my old primary school which is not far from there.

Decent but I don't think the new stuff holds up to the old stuff (damn could I be more of a hipster? I mean holy fuck I'm saying that I only like the mountain goat's earlier stuff, jesus christ almighty)
Sweden and All Hail West Texas are masterpieces (hipster, such a fucking hipster) but everything after that hasn't had that same feel and the wordplay has been clever but the imagery not as beautiful imo
One of the admins, Romona, is allegedly in Crystal Castles. It says so in her admin profile. It also says that Joseph Kay is JK's brother. It's all a rouse to put us of the scent though - the truth is that all the admins are in MI 5.
Talking of JK, isn't it time we had a favourite dancer thread?
That's pretty funny, a guy getting thrown off a plane as a suspect of terrorism for playing the corporate trendy wankers The Clash, who's rebellion extended no further than being punks premier clothes horses and shagging Sloane Rangers. Despite my revulsion at Westbourne Grove's most exalted sons I have to admit that Complete Control was one of the best punk records made in the seventies but fuck all the adulation of these phoney bastards.
Very interesting and readable article but I think some of the generalisations are just a little too broad.
When Beefheart rocked Glasgow at this time, I was there. His Magic Band was truly excellent with Winged Eel Fingerling on guitar.
He was important to lots of people then - listen to 'Captain Beefheart & Mr. Neal' by the Angel Brothers and Satnam Singh with Ian McMillian (BBC Radio 3, 2003). Sadly not on the web.
Vivian Stanshall! Still love the Bonzos. Agree, together, what a combination that would have been.
This was where I first found the captain, on Zappa’s ‘Hot Rats’ LP - ‘Willie The Pimp’ (1969). Zappa could solo without boring your bum off. Still sounds good today!
My profuse to apologies to Boomerang and others of sensibility for the vile crime of posting 'credible' music. I mean, real musicians - just too ghastly! Let's just hope this little belter puts me back on the right side of the ledger?
Ok, if we're gonna start wielding guitar solos then they might as well be 3 minutes long;
http://youtu.be/V9knIlUc5Cs
These guys are amazing musicians yet have no credibility whatsoever. Quite a feat that?!!!
Anyhow, that arch clever clogs and champion of the virtuoso, Factvalue likes it - I'm not sure that is in its favour though?
Oops! Just realised I've exposed myself as not having watched the girl of good old Frank before I responded. What a fucking dick! Pretty cool vid though actually and musically far better than his later work.
Been listening to Texas Ruby recently.
She had a terrific voice and an attitude to life similar to Bessie Smith.
In ‘Finding Her Voice – Women in Country Music’ there is a great story of her cussin’ out Ronald ‘Dutch’ Regan when he emceed the Texas Ruby/Zeke Clements radio program on WHO. After that he refused to announce her, and the future president went west for a screen test.
Always been a favourite but A Foggy Day by Ella and Louis has never been far from me the last few weeks.

Webby #167 When Beefheart
Webby #167
When Beefheart rocked Glasgow at this time, I was there. His Magic Band was truly excellent with Winged Eel Fingerling on guitar.
He was important to lots of people then - listen to 'Captain Beefheart & Mr. Neal' by the Angel Brothers and Satnam Singh with Ian McMillian (BBC Radio 3, 2003). Sadly not on the web.
Auld Bod: speaking of

Vivian Stanshall! Still love the Bonzos. Agree, together, what a combination that would have been.
This was where I first found the captain, on Zappa’s ‘Hot Rats’ LP - ‘Willie The Pimp’ (1969). Zappa could solo without boring your bum off. Still sounds good today!

Been listening to Texas Ruby
Been listening to Texas Ruby recently.
She had a terrific voice and an attitude to life similar to Bessie Smith.
In ‘Finding Her Voice – Women in Country Music’ there is a great story of her cussin’ out Ronald ‘Dutch’ Regan when he emceed the Texas Ruby/Zeke Clements radio program on WHO. After that he refused to announce her, and the future president went west for a screen test.
