Pretty bad news. While not wanting to defend local government this wll have a bunch of negative effects.

-The end of national pay scales for teachers.
-Less money (not-for-profits still generate 'surpluses' pay high salaries to top management etc and have a tendency to sign very expensive deals, for maintenance for example, with 'independent' contractors.
-Worse conditions for students. Academies don't tend to outperform, especially if you account for the increased budgets (bribes) that have come to an end that often raise results by helping schools compete for a better intake rather than improving.
-Worse conditions for teachers, academies have been accused of using recently qualified teachers as canon fodder and using them until they burn out (conveniently when they're getting near the top of the pay scale) by overworking them, often institutin unpaid overtime in the form of afterschool clubs etc.

Labour are against it, which is irony that doesn"t even manage to arouse bitterness it is so unsurprising and hypocritical.

IS there any likelihood of a reaction? Teachers were pretty demoralised when they hit the pensions a couple of years ago amongst other things,.

Shit man, sorry to hear this. I had thought the academy drive had sort of run out of steam, but it looks like the was only round 1.
