Ex-Aston Villa footballer Dalian Atkinson reportedly approached police in a 'non-threatening manner' before he was Tasered and later died.
The 48-year-old had flown into 'drunken rage' and was banging on the door of his father's home in Telford, Shropshire, before police were called, neighbours claim.
West Mercia Police raced to the scene at around 1.30am and a Taser was deployed but the former striker suffered cardiac arrest and died at around 3am, paramedics said.
Witnesses claim the Taser was deployed 'multiple times' and those that knew the star say he was "not a violent man", describing him as a "gentle giant".
The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) and West Mercia Police said they will assist the IPCC with their inquiries.
On the football forums now, I'm getting into trouble for saying that the police killed him, apparently dying after being tasered is completely different to being killed.
