Willi Winkelmann: The "Red Counsel" of Barcelona

Submitted by David in Atlanta on May 8, 2008

If someone has the time and skills to translate, this would be a great addition to libcom library.
Winkelmann played an important role in exposing German nazis working underground in Spain.

Winkelmann seems to have come to anarcho-syndicalism by way of the International Transport Workers Federation, at the time administered by General Secretary Edo Fimmen a left socialist , industrial internationalist and advocate of using union power to counter-attack against fascism

Winkelmann was interned in France after the collapse of the Republic. He was then arrested twice by the Vichy regime, the second time in 1940 when he was handed over to the Gestapo. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison. With the Liberation he chose to stay in the GDR and joined the SED (Communist Party). He became an informer for the Stasi in 1955, and the following year was rewarded with a permanent job in factory management.

Hate to hear that, when so many German syndicalists stayed the course.
