Why only America? Surely if there was a god (which there clearly isn't) then he would either bless everyone (including North Korea) or nobody. Also, if there is a god then I'd say his blessings are not of much use to those harmed and killed by Hurricane Harvey. Unless they are religious people we are talking about because dead religious people will get to be with that god guy that they are so fond of- surely thats what they want? In which case they should welcome death with open arms if you ask me.

A tragic event indeed. The outpourings of support from philanthropic millionaires/billionaires who wouldn't otherwise care about poor working class people, always the ones least able to cope with events like these, has been particularly nauseating, this guy for example. (And not just him, Trump himself, the climate change denier, is apparently donating a million dollars, along with other celebrities donating large amounts.) It would look more sincere if they used their fortune and status to speak out on some of the contributing factors to disasters like these, a profit-driven capitalism that disregards people and the environment for starters. It's otherwise this cyclical donating to poor people in times of crisis, addressing the symptoms but not the causes, and then celebrating these millionaires/billionaires for being so merciful.

Article in The Guardian asking whether deaths among clean-up workers will be higher than during the hurricane.

Three people (one homeowner) have died already and unlike New York after 9/11 most of the work will be done by day labourers, often hired directly by homeowners so non-experts buying equipment out of their own pocket which is a recipe for disaster. I had also not realised that 1000 people died clearing up in New York, it's not something that comes up often.
