US-Iran escalation

Submitted by ajjohnstone on January 4, 2020

I thought with all the sabre rattling going on and the leftist condemnation, this interview was a useful read

https://www.commondreams.org/views/2020/01/04/whats-really-going-us-and-iran

“Ironically, before the most recent US attacks, tens of thousands of Iraqis were demonstrating against Iran’s presence in Iraq. In November, protestors even burned the Iranian consulate in Najaf, Iraq. Recent Trump administration actions, however, have swung Iraqi popular opinion against the US, and the anti-Iran demonstrations have stopped…The people of the US have no national interest in protecting oil company profits. Recent events have shown that people in the region don’t want to be dominated by any foreign power, whether the US or Iran.”

In the meantime, with no official media committee to issue press releases, the SPGB blog had to suffice with this statement.

I've been a bit frustrated by how hard it's been to find proper internationalist class takes, rather than just standard geopolitical ones, on this.
There's a short statement from Iranian anarchist comrades here: https://asranarshism.com/1398/10/14/the-anarchist-era/

Slightly unexpectedly, I have to admit that this politician from Virginia has given one of the best succinct summaries I've seen so far.

WSPUS statement on the prospect of war

https://www.wspus.org/2020/01/war-with-iran-teetering-on-the-brink/

Many seem to forget that Iraqi's were burning down the Iranian consulate and protesting against both US and Iran's presence in Iraq.

https://socialismoryourmoneyback.blogspot.com/2019/11/iraqs-protests-persist.html
https://socialismoryourmoneyback.blogspot.com/2019/10/revolution-of-hunger.html

Also forgotten were the Iranian protests.
https://socialismoryourmoneyback.blogspot.com/2019/11/iran-ignites-in-protest.html
https://socialismoryourmoneyback.blogspot.com/2019/11/iranian-protesters-murdered.html

Trump has now effectively silenced those, for any expression of dissent will now be viewed as pro-American and anti-patriotic.

Will you be doing that as a leaflet? Also, Crimethinc have done a couple of poster designs:
No War With Iran
and
Against All Wars, Against All Governments

IMO, you could make a pretty decent internationalist leaflet with one of those for the front, and the ACG statement, or at least an extract the right length to fit on one side of A5, on the back. Or indeed extracts from the Black Rose or Middle East Socialists statements.

ETA: oh, Crimethinc also have their own statement here: https://crimethinc.com/2020/01/08/against-all-wars-against-all-governments-the-real-danger-of-the-conflict-with-iran

...you want anything doing properly, you have to do it yourself: http://libcom.org/library/internationalist-leaflets-against-war-iran Apologies to internationalist comrades everywhere for my boring (lack of) layout/graphic design skills, but if people want to make better ones they should feel free to do so.

The revelation that the Iranian military shot down flight 752 and tragically killing 176 people has resulted in a surge of protests in Iran.

A friend of mine has been translating the chants at several protests throughout the country.

The thread is here

And with their permission I compiled them into a video with English subtitles

If you have time, I think it might also be worth compiling that thread as a short blog-type article, because twitter/social media in general is terrible at preserving stuff over time, and it'd be good to have that information somewhere people will be able to find it months/years down the line.

Your not kidding, trying to add more than one tweet wiped half the entry.

This is the best I can do for now

Not had a chance to listen yet, but the Final Straw just did an interview with Iranian anarchists which sounds like an important listen: https://thefinalstrawradio.noblogs.org/post/2020/01/12/perspectives-from-iranian-anarchists/

Clover interviewed Nick Estes for Commune here: https://communemag.com/with-a-thousand-ancestors-front-and-back/

Estes did an invited visit to Venezuela and was hosted officially by Maduro: https://www.newcoldwar.org/us-indigenous-leader-nick-estes-addresses-nicolas-maduro/

Estes also signed the bad Iran letter mentioned in https://nothingiseverlost.wordpress.com/2020/01/16/bombs-over-diyala-drones-over-hajin-a-response-to-joshua-clover-on-iran/

It's not grayzone/Marcyite level, but smells a bit like Trotskyism to me.
