Fascists burn down social centre in Thessaloniki

Report on yesterday's fascist violence in Thessaloniki, Greece, which saw two social centres attacked, including Libertatia, a libertarian communist social centre, which was burnt down. Also includes a statement from the Libertatia collective, calling for a demonstration this evening.

The lead article for November was on wildcat postal strikes, which saw 30,000 walk out over "terms and conditions. After the Communication Worker’s Union’s (CWU) ballot over national strike action was lost the Royal Mail management have tried to press ahead with "modernisation" of the service. Modernisation of course being destruction of the union, wage cuts and slashing up to 30,000 jobs.

A general strike of the tobacco workers and other unions on May 8th 1936 led to the bloody events of May 9th. The police confronted the massive strike by opening fire on the protesters. 12 dead and hundreds of wounded in one of the most important days in greek working class history.
