More than 2,000 workers want their salaries increased to $800 a month from as low as $240. Head of the workers union, Manuel Sa said the strike would go on indefinitely until workers could negotiate directly with the country's minister of transportation.

"Workers will strike because there is no agreement on salaries," Sa told Reuters, adding that workers should benefit from increasing business at the port, which has seen its activity rise by 70 percent in the last two years.

The deputy director of the Port, Pedro Joaquim, said he was unaware of the strike.

The port of Lobito, 700 kms (430 miles) south of the capital Luanda, has helped turn Angola into one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Luanda has the country's biggest port.
