Famous for his work on the film Battle of Culloden, War Games a what if? about the dangerous and brutalities of nuclear war, and La Commune and multi hour examination of the Paris Commune, in 1961 Watkins attempted to explain and recreate the events and implications of the Hungarian revolution by dramatization,

A l'âge de 25 ans, Watkins usait déjà du faux "reportage télévisé", pour faire "témoigner" plusieurs insurgéEs en plein feu de l'action. Une pure immersion que l'on retrouvera dans quasiment tous ses films...
