hey, thanks for trying. How big is the PDF? Our maximum file size is 16 MB.

So if it is a bit bigger you can just split it into two using a website like splitpdf.com

Or you can try compressing it using a website like compresspdf.com, but check the quality is still okay afterwards

Our sector is a fucking disaster area in so many ways but one of the biggest is the current load of JobCentre mandated ESOL classes replacing classes that people actually wanted to go to but couldn't get places on because of the shortage of funding. The upshot of this is that ESOL teachers are becoming complicit in the JCP machine of sanctioning benefits. I've written a plea to my fellow ESOL teachers to refuse to take part in this. Please can I have permission to post it?

I want to post the content attached here, along with a brief comment about why I have written this piece and what it is meant to accomplish on libcom.

I am Steven Colatrella of Midnight Notes (though this is not necessarily a Midnight Notes piece per se), and am "MidnightSteven" as user name on your site.

The attached is a proposal that I call "Cosmopolis" which is a proposed Constitutional framework for us to transcend capitalism and the nation-state.

It relies on the idea that the city is, for reasons I intend to explicate over coming weeks, the best sphere for us to focus on for transforming the world and posits a world of sovereign cities with common ownership, cooperative self-management and other features that would enable us to get out of global capitalism and national states to something better.

I see it as a way to give a political and institutional form that is implicit in the recent movements against capitalism, that synthesizes a large number of local initiatives around the world, but that is more universal and cosmopolitan in scope than global capitalism itself. Indeed it is anything but a form of "localism" yet enables us to fight for the commons no longer on the defensive but as part and parcel of a struggle for a different planetary order without states.

It tries to show how we can abolish national borders, establish universal access to citizenship for all, provide for subsistence and other basic needs for all, abolish prisons, the wage system, and a host of other evils in a plausible way and link daily struggles to that effort.

I was tired of hearing at events, protests, conferences and the like that we needed to develop an alternative. So I came up with this. Libcom seems one of the best places I can think of to get criticism, feedback and get a discussion started on it.

Would it be possible for me to get blogability? (If not, then article-publishing permission for a purgatorial period would still be much appreciated--I just registered, so hesitancy on your part would be totally understandable, though I've been a reader at this site for a while).

Basically, I'd focus on various enemies of our central enemies, and the meanings of those conflicts for our struggles (I'd try to avoid the Machiavellianisms these sorts of analyses from the left generally turn into, i.e. "how can we play one side off of that other one," as if class war is a kind of technocratic game). I'd try for an article every week or so, and, since the theme is very vague, and I'm a stranger, here are a few examples that might loosely fit:

-My experience working closely with two very different trade unions involved in contract-bargaining strikes at my privatizing university (UCLA), as well as with the anti-tuition struggle there, and how the roles of the school administration and of the state played in quite differently, and how we had to account for that.
-The liberal media's disproportionately prominent portrayals of anarcho-capitalist spectacles such as Porcfest/Bitcoin/Second Life, and how it tries to turn them into the hegemonic definition of statelessness in order to keep capitalism's main fairytales (war of all against all, barter, tragedy of the commons) alive, which helps both keep on as coherent ideological systems, despite their ahistoricity and logical circularity.
-Some basic number-crunching on how various groups materially fared from some different national liberation movements.

And so forth.

I'm currently writing about the Autonomous Students Network and I'd like to put the following text into the library for reference :

The NUS - Outside it, Against it!

Produced by activists in the London Autonomous Student's Network, (in 2009)

The NUS - Whats the big deal?

Put simply, the National Union of Students (NUS) is designed to control, pacify and compromise the student movement. It is a way of disempowering students trying to fight together for radical social change. Due to the partisan nature of the NUS, the efforts and energies of campaigning students have been usurped by those who seek to gain control - instead of organising amongst ourselves for the battles we need to win, we have been organised into campaigns for various contesting political factions.

But don't we get something from this? These people are there to represent us, right?

More often than not, wrong. The union’s hierarchical structures divide and alienate us, thereby stopping us from being an effective force for change. The democratic centralist structure of the NUS means that, within it, we spend more time trying to make something "policy" than actually getting out there and doing it. As for elections, those who win elections are granted a position of authority over the student body and set apart from their comrades. Those who lose continue to have no voice other than to select who they would like to win in the future.

So what about these new Governance Review Proposals, then?

The democratic processes that swept (ahem!) the NUS elites to power are under attack - and, naturally, those at the top of the NUS unwaveringly support these reforms that secure their position. [INFORMATION ON THE REFORMS] Whilst this may allow the careerist right-wingers of the union to considerably improve their CV, it illustrates the extent to which the union is controlled by those who do not see in it's role the facilitation of a militant collective student movement. Although the radical left are fighting to save the union from these reforms, they - and the union itself - will be unable to offer us anything in the means of organising for real struggle relevant to our positions as students and, increasingly, as workers. Petitions, campaigns and facebook groups are all well and good, but we can achieve so much more than this in our colleges and workplaces - and unfortunately, the existance of the NUS stands fundamentally against this. For example, Education Not For Sale, a left-wing faction, has argued for NUS to resume it's commitment to free education and grants for all, funded by taxation of the rich. The NUS will not even pay lip-service to this idea - while the power and organisation lies in the conference halls and offices of the union it will not be based on our needs and we will have no power in deciding our own course of action.

Whats the alternative?

To most of us students, the union is irrelevant beyond getting twatted at the SU Bar. Its officers, policies & governance are not irrelevant because we are apathetic or unable to appreciate what they are doing 'for' us. It is because the union does not seek relevance to our lives - as we have shown, it is merely another channel with which our militancy is regulated and stifled. Our struggles, if they are to be meaningful and successful, must be based on our actual experiences and directed entirely by ourselves. Getting people talking about these things may seem like a long shot, but you're already doing it. These are the issues we complain about to each other over a cup of tea in the morning...and over that cup of tea is where we can plan to take action over it! The things that are actually happening in our lives are not irrelevant and can never be irrelevant. However, if we are to choose to do this we will be most successful if we agree how we are to do it. Setting up non-heirarchical groups with completley open decision-making processes has enabled many activists to avoid the trappings of concentrated power. Autonomy of both collective and individuals working within that collective also means that coercion and control by any opportunist political group can be avoided. A strong focus on anti-capitalism and class consciousness helps to inform us of the significance of our actions (and the responses!) And, finally, emphasis on Direct Action means no more wasting of energy on begging officials and politicians to recognise the 'legitimacy' of our plight. No more fucking about - Let's get back to our homes, our colleges and our workplaces and let's get organised!

Would like to upload a translation I've done (I'm bilingual) from the German original of anarcho-syndicalist Rudolf Rocker's 'Absolutist Ideas in Socialism' ('Absolutistische Gedankengaenge im Sozialismus', 1950) to the Library archives. It deals with how authoritarian socialist ideas from the Jacobins, Lassalle and Marx onwards paved the way to 20th century totalitarianism. I haven't been able to find another English translation of this text on the internet as yet, so it might be a first. Maybe a new translation can avoid those dreadful copyright hassles apparently raging around Rocker's works at the moment?

And you'll see the British didn't get their reputation for beef-eating for nothing.

Well saying we're London-based isn't subjective, and it's inaccurate. Four of us are in London, the rest are in Edinburgh, Brighton, Bristol and Minneapolis. I'm not sure about any admins commenting in threads on animal rights (I don't normally bother) but the ones I have seen seem to mostly have American contributors in any case

I would like to post an article what i wrote about a Arubian man beaten to death by Hague police in the Netherlands. Her it is:

Mitch Henriquez's death was a murder

After the Night at the Park Festival in Zuiderpark in The Hague, the Netherlands, 42 year old Mitch Henriquez was killed as a result of intense police violence. The public prosecutor said in its first statement that Mitch Henriquez started to feel unwell in a police van on the way to the police station. However, video recordings and statements of bystanders tell a completely different story.

The public prosecutor claimed in its first statement: 'The man was placed under arrest after claiming that he had a weapon. The man resisted arrest and the police subsequently used force in order to bring him to the police station. On the way to the police station he began to feel sick. The officers performed CPR and the man was brought by ambulance to the hospital in very critical condition.' This statement was embraced by the Dutch media without question.

However, on the Arubian website MasNoticia.com, family members gave a completely different interpretation of what happened. His cousin said: “Henriquez was joking around with a group of friends when a group of officers confronted them. Then they arrested him. His entire face was beaten black and blue.” Eyewitnesses also stated on social media: “I was standing no more than 4 meters away from him but I didn't hear the man say anything about having a gun. He walked away and 4 officers jumped on him.” And: “An officer kept beating him on his head and legs.” Video recordings are also in conflict with the police and public prosecutor's statements. In one video, one can see that 4 officers are sitting on top of him and are trying to gag him while holding him in a headlock, a stranglehold which the police are forbidden from using. In a second video one can see that he is laying lifeless on the ground. Officers try to sit him up but the man is no longer responsive. His head falls forward because he is already unconscious or in a coma. Instead of performing CPR or calling an ambulance, the police throw the man into the van which then rides away. But why?

Cover-up mechanism
The fact that the police and prosecution have been so quick to go to the press with statements regarding police brutality is nothing new. This creates the illusion that the police have done nothing wrong. It is the mechanism that is put to work every time the police do something wrong. For years, The Hague police force has been enveloped in scandals with regard to racist police brutality. In many cases where it was obvious that the police used excessive force, these claims were dismissed with, “we are just doing our job”, “we do not agree with the findings”, and “the police are under a lot of pressure”. Again and again, the officers are covered by police leadership and the mayor. When 17 year old Rishi Chandrikasing was shot to death on November 24, 2012 at Holland Spoor Station, this cover-up mechanism was also put to work. Officers claim to have thought that Rishi had a weapon, which apparently was just his mobile phone. The police opened fire on him while he was running away. A claim was also made that 4 armed officers were afraid of a 17 year old boy. Now that the public prosecutor has rescinded its first statement as a result of much criticism, it is clear that they repeatedly try to blur the facts with lies and that nothing changes.

Even though it was clear during the court case that the officer shouldn't have opened fire, he was acquitted and protected by police leadership. But the police didn't just stop there. While Rishi's family and friends were still in mourning, the police began with a character assassination. Rishi apparently had traces of cannabis and alcohol in his blood and was under the supervision of the department of children and family services. These baseless accusations are not a relevant standard to justify taking someone's life, but were used to show Rishi in a bad light as “someone who had it coming.” The same mechanism is being put to work yet again. There was talk of a weapon, next they will say that he had been drinking (and if that is the case, he would not have been the only one at the festival) and had resisted arrest. And it won't surprise me when we in a few weeks will hear a story from an officer who was scared to death.

We can now conclude that excessive force was used to arrest a man who was simply walking away, and that the public prosecutor is lying to the media and to the people. It is clear that Mitch was already unconscious and that the police refused medical care while they drove around with him, only later calling an ambulance. It cannot be said that he simply began to feel sick in the police van, this was murder, or at very least a wrongful death.

I can't breathe
The death of Mitch Henriquez makes one think about a combination of two similar cases in America. Eric Garner died after he was kept in a chokehold by an officer who was arresting him. Garner shouted “I can't breathe” 11 times before losing consciousness and dying. Freddie Gray was seriously injured during his arrest. He broke three ribs and injured his spine and neck. Gray was thrown into a police van. He received no medical care and died a week later in his cell. As a result of the deaths of these two African American men, protests broke out across America. If we want to stop police brutality, the lies from the public prosecutor and the cover-up mechanism, then we must take to the streets to protest. The death of Mitch Henriquez was murder, the latest on the police death list. It cannot be ignored.

The problem is that it is 40 something pages long. I know that on this site you all have literature that is split up into chapters. Like you have links for different chapters so it's easier to read. I want to do that, but don't see how.

For the last five years, the policy of devaluation not only of our labour power but also of our life as a whole (also known as the “Memorandum”) has been relentless and inexorable. It is served and promoted both by the Right wing and the Left wing of the state and capital.
We, waged workers, unemployed, students and housewives who make this announcement, are people who have been involved in various class struggles, either within the workplaces or in the working-class neighborhoods, all these years.

We are the ones who, whether we voted in favor of NO, meaning NO to the policy of austerity and devaluation as a whole, or abstained from the referendum consciously, rejecting the dilemmas posed by the political parties, share a common desire. The desire to defend the interests of our class against the interests of the bosses and to contribute to all possible ways of collective action to meet our social needs.

We share, in short, the necessity:

TO ORGANIZE THE VISIBILITY OF OUR CLASS AND OF OUR NEEDS IN THE PUBLIC SPACE 

For the last five years we have suffered far too much and now the capitalist state is assuring us, after adopting the 3rd Memorandum, that we will continue to suffer: wage and pension reductions, cuts in health and education spending, non-existent unemployment benefits, increases in the direct taxation of our homes, increases in the indirect taxation on food, catering, transport.

We spit on the “humanitarian aid” offered to us by local and the international capitalists and the political personnel that represents them. We are not beggars, we do not need them; they are the ones who are still here thanks to our own “humanism” and the coercive labour time that we provide them with.

WE WILL NOT REMAIN PASSIVE SPECTATORS OF RECENT DEVELOPMENTS. WE WILL NOT GO WINDOW-SHOPPING STARING AT THE PRICE OF THE VARIOUS POLITICAL COMMODITIES

ADDENDUM: On Wednesday 15, after the end of the morning demonstration of workers in the public sector, the Assembly made an intervention at the subway to claim free transport. On Thursday 16,  working groups which were proposed in the first meeting for the organization of activities and events were formed. On Sunday 19, the Assembly will take solidarity action with the striking workers in the commercial sector who will blockade the central commercial street of Athens against the abolition of the Sunday holiday. On Tuesday 21st and Thursday 23rd, the Assembly will organize two public meetings, one on the new austerity measures and one on the self-reduction of prices and debts in Syntagma Square.

I would like to submit an article by Helmut Wagner of the Dutch GIK that first appeared in the journal Ratekorrespondenz.

The name of the piece is Anarchism and the Spanish Revolution.

I've also gone and done a translation of a pamphlet written by the Proletenstemmen (Voice of the Proletariat), ICL (Internationalist Communist League), Internationale Arbeiders Raden Vereeniging (International Workers’ Councils Association), and GIK (Group of International Communists) on the Spanish Civil War from another translation into Spanish that I found.

The pamphlet is much shorter (about 1000 words), whereas the Wagner piece is roughly 8500 words.

Milhões morrem de doenças preveníveis, enquanto as empresas farmacêuticas gastam mais em marketing do que em pesquisa importante. O mercado não reconhece as necessidades humanas, reconhece apenas o dinheiro equivalente. A única maneira de conseguir dinheiro é trabalhando para um patrão ou reivindicando auxílios do Estado. Ao trabalhar por um salário, nossos próprios corpos e mentes entram no mercado como coisas a serem compradas e vendidas.

Quando trabalhamos, produzimos ainda mais coisas que podem ser vendidas no mercado. Mas nós não recebemos o pagamento pelo valor total que criamos, senão não haveria nenhum lucro para os patrões. Se a empresa não consegue lucros suficientes, ela entra em falência, somos demitidos e o dinheiro será investido em outro lugar. Os interesses dos patrões não são os mesmos que os nossos. O problema do mercado não é que os preços seriam muito altos ou a oferta muito baixa; e nem é a falta ou excesso de regulamentação. O problema é que tudo tem um preço. No mundo do mercado, as necessidades humanas só existem se por acaso formos ricos o suficiente para pagar. I would like to post a short article in English, but since I can not write very well in English, I do not know if it is readable for English native speakers. Also, I do not know which section to publish it. I think it might be of interest to you because it is very related to the ideas of you in the debate on parecon. The article was originally written as a response to "libertarians" who see scarcity as a natural, objective and eternal consecration of private property and the market. (The original article in Portuguese: Propriedade privada, escassez e democracia)

Private property, scarcity and democracy - Humanaesfera

"No one votes; neither the majority nor the minority ever makes the law. If a proposition can gather enough workers to put it into operation, whether they be in the majority or the minority, it is carried out, so long as it accords with the will of those who adhere to it." Description of a free association in the communism by Joseph Déjacque (Le Humanisphère, 1857).

Only one condition underlies the demand for democracy (including direct democracy): the scarcity. The claim for democracy only makes sense in the very ground on which flourishes private property - inaccessibility, deprivation, tyranny. The vote and profit are two poles of the same deprivation of access for people to its conditions of existence. Both poles presuppose the state, that is, violence. In a pole, policing in order to ensure by force the monopolization which establish the scarce (private property, prices, the free market, "invisible hand"). In the other pole, policing in order to compensate for monopolization (equitable distribution, voting, boring assemblies and meetings, distribution of rations and handouts of "social welfare"). Theses are the two poles of legitimization of the same status quo.

What underpins the two poles is the private mode of production, capitalism. Only that which can be monopolized has price: the scarcity is the very condition of existence of the market, the very definition of private property. The value of goods is proportional to the difficulty ("work") for access to its production. Thus, its mode of producing is mere labor, an activity devoid of any intrinsic value and only worth for something else (reward, retribution, merit, salary, money, profit) - therefore a ativity which is always abstract and servile. The machines replace the work, but in the private mode of production its function is solely to scourge the workers with unemployment so they "offer" to work even more for even less. To overcome the material basis of all this, we need to tear away this straightjacket, private property, and to free global productive forces to make them freely accessible practical conditions for anyone who wants to satisfy his inclinations, needs, desires and develop his faculties, abilities and passions - as activities worth for themselves.

From this perspective, even the most radical democratic claim for self-management ("factory to the workers!", "land to the peasants!") is inherently captive of private property and therefore of state (ie of violence), even captive of nationalist mythology ("the nation to nationals"). Self-management of enterprises are today clearly untenable, because if there are enterprises (whether self-managed or not), then the conditions of existence of the population remain private for her, that is, the workers are still coerced to selling themselves in the labor market in return for survival (wages). It is only possible to this deprivation (private property) be abolished by abolishing the enterprise (whether particular, cooperative, state ...), as well as by abolishing the national borders, liberating the productive forces worldwide in order to interconnect them to a network of immanent flows which surpasses the exchange for equivalents (no more reducing production to a extrinsic rule, for example, market, profit or hierarchy). Thereafter, the means of production can no longer be ownership of nobody because it have become, in itselves, the very worldwide material community of individuals in free association.

Once enterprise is abolished, it will not make longer sense to talk about employees or unemployed *, but only about individuals who associate freely through his many passions, needs, projects, desires, inclinations ... whose free expression will be itself production, activity (no longer subject to any equivalent, as it was dismantled the basis of domination which is the system of rewards and punishments). This will mean that, without having nothing to constrain nobody to sell (himself in the labor market) to survive, no one will be forced to buy, which makes the market completely obsolete (probably as a hobby for nothing, the market will still exist, never as a mandatory social link). The material basis for the flourishing of free individuality is communism, because it is the overcoming of the terrain of the massification comparative that is the coercion called competition (market, nations, hierarchy...).

It is true that, either by natural reasons or by technical insufficiency, some (or many, probably) productions will continue inevitably rare, scarce and not easily accessible and will therefore still be subject either to democracy (voting to decide a criteria: raffle, equal distribution, distribution according especific "work" done, or for people most urgently needed...) or to direct private appropriation. But the capacity to overcome capitalism by communism will be the greater the more its material basis, which is the free production, prevail over democratic production, that is, the more wealth is enjoyed as free creativity in the global human community. In contrast, if the democratic aspect predominate, it means the ground upon which the capital and state (democracy or dictatorship) springs from was unsurpassed and probably them will return in one way or another (starting with the "black market" and the survival of the state and the mythology of nation), as the most appropriate social form ("legitimate", they say) to the scarcity, the monopoly, to private property, to tyranny.

A final clarification: all ideas presented here boil down to classic positions of the proletariat since at least the eighteenth century (see bibliography below). And since none of these minimum needs has yet been met - and instead they was repressed almost to the point of becoming unconscious - and once the extent and intensity of proletarization today are the largest in history, communism remains more urgent than ever.

I would like to submit it here because, as far as I've seen, there hasn't been an up-to-date account of this kind. I know it's a little long, but this is a relatively obscure and difficult topic. So I think it would be beneficial that others learn from a broad summary of official documents and first-hand accounts, rather than having to start from scratch. I am sure there are weaknesses, but I am confident in its quality; there are sources included of course.

DYSTOPIAN WORK ENVIRONMENT IS TOXIC AND UNHEALTHY

The following may be done in other workplaces, but was blatantly the case at my local. Manager Mr. W. has union member(s) he selects covertly, report back to him on work details of custodial workers, to see if the work is being done to his expectation. This is direct violation as outlined in the collective agreement: "No member shall wrong another member...etc" Incidently, this is an oath repeated with each swearing in of any new member. I know it verbatum.
Furthermore, the 'spy' union worker, wanting to please the manager and thereby discredit himself to all other members, instead of refusing to do the manager's biding, continues this practice repeatedly, eventually creating dissention and distrust within the rank and file of the local.
If management needed people to inspect the work of the employees, managment should send a person within management. I suppose no one wanted this unsavory position. People were scared of losing their jobs, so they shut up and did nothing.
Out of this violation of managment/employee work ethics, the 'spy' everyone knew was 'screwing' them would next go out of his way to find insignificant imperfections in other members work and on occasion "set" the worker up by planting items in order to "trap" the worker, and thereby thwart his ability to do this job. The work place, needless to say became intolerable.
Our own union rep. then had the stupid audacity to say to our members gathered at a closed union meeting "you people are being f***ed". Nothing was reallyever done.
Only when Mr. W. was let go (for reasons I was never privy to) did this practice lessen, but never completely disappeared from the work place. Should employees be subjected to 'Gestapo' like treatment in a dystopian work environment?

Having found usefull news about the Bursa Renault strikes in Turkey, I could write an article for a Dutch audience. Now that I have a translation in English I would like to put it on a blog.

In the future I hope to blog more in English, mainly translations from the Dutch blog "Arbeidersstemmen" on workers struggles from a council communist perspective.

I was hoping to get set up to post content to libcom.org. I have been helping Silvia Federici and George Caffentzis with digitizing some of their archive and there is much from the collection that may be appropriate. The first materials I was interested in posting are the newsletters of the Committee for Academic Freedom in Africa (CAFA) which cover structural adjustment programs of the IMF and World Bank in the late 80s and 90s focusing on their effect on African institutions of higher learning. There are some great unpublished articles in the eighteen newsletters released from 1990-2003.

I think they could be posted as a book with multiple pdf chapters-linked to a basic description. I don't have the text digitized.
