Unions end week of Alitalia wildcat strikes

Workers for airline Alitalia at Rome's main airport have agreed to call off a week of unofficial industrial action following a request from unions.

The unions, having called off their own strikes, asked wildcat strikers to return to work while they negotiate with the government.

These events follow Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's threat to use the army against the strikers.

The Alitalia wildcat strikes were in response to restructuring at the beleaguered carrier. The backlog of work will take several days to clear.
