A short study-circle syllabus on Marx by the socialist historian Max Beer. It was published in 1924 by the Labour Research Department as part of its workers’ education series. It covers three areas: Marx’s general views (class society, the relativity of economic and ethical concepts, the Hegelian inheritance), historic materialism, and political economy, from surplus value to the falling rate of profit. It also includes a short biographical sketch of Marx and a suggested order for reading Capital. It ends with G. D. H. Cole’s practical hints for students and class leaders, and period adverts from the Plebs League and the Communist Bookshop. It is a good example of how Marxism was taught to British worker-students in the 1920s.
