Around 1,000 teachers have been arrested in Iran following strikes and protests last week.
Iran has clamped down on teachers following strikes of 100,000 last week and a 10,000 strong picket outside parliament. These mass arrests come after six teachers' union leaders were arrested during International Womens Day events. The teachers strike last week was the largest workers' action in recent years, and possibly since the revolution of 1979. In Iran independent unions are illegal, and the strike was said to have been organised by word of mouth amongst teachers, rather than called by any one organisation.
