IKEA and CGS have finally surrendered. CGS is the contracting consortium for the Swedish giant warehouse in Piacenza which serves all of Southern Europe. After months of struggle, clashes and charges, the consortium has had to reinstate all the workers it suspended because of the protests.
The last nine workers, guilty of being part of the S.I. COBAS union, will return to their jobs. This first victory was won on January 7th, at a meeting of local political representatives, the local police, the company and the unions.
The struggle is far from being over. The conditions which led the workers to protest have not changed: discrimination against unionized workers, racism and miserable wages. Now, though, IKEA and CGS will find it much more difficult to repress the workers’ claims.
