Welcome!

This is a thread for new users to say hi, say how they found the site and ask any questions which they may not want to post a new thread about.

Coming into a community where everybody is throwing their Kropotkins and Bakunins about like tennis balls can often be daunting. In-jokes and people's cliques can seem off-putting, but every community has them - you will find that most people are pretty friendly once you start posting.

Don't forget to fill out your profile information by click on 'my account' at the top of the page.

Try and keep complex crap, in-jokes, flames and arguments off this thread and lets let newcomers feel at home :) A good way to get a basic introduction is to check out our posting guidelines.

Cheers, and welcome to our new users from the libcom.org crew 8-)

I can't remember if I ever made an intro post, but here's another Revleftist looking for discussion.

I'm currently reading Dauve's Eclipse & Re-Emergence of the Communist Movement, and I'm pretty into how easy to follow it and Endnotes are. I'm not super educated and a lot of leftist stuff is hard for me to follow - my education after high school has pretty much been reading books. I'm thinking of reading something along the lines of Vaneigem's Revolution of Daily Life or Tronti's Worker and Capital next.

I'm not really fond of arguing and... I hope to have productive discussions.

Hello, folks.

I've been interested in anarchism since my late teens and I'm now in my early 30s. I joined this forum to keep up on the anarchist movement around the world; something I've been lazy with over the last couple of years owed to other commitments. I hope to meet some decent people here and debate interesting stuff as to wake up that part of my brain again..

I'm primarily an author, but I also write the occasional serious piece for Consented. My website is here:

Feel free to ask any questions. Meanwhile I'm off for a browse...

Hello new to Socialism. Went to a Socialist Party public meeting on Jeremy Corbyn September 2015. Been to several SPEW branch meetings. Read lots of SPEW pamphlets but reading a blog post recently on another website by ex member of SPEW who resigned in April 2013 made me have pause for thought and come to conclusion Socialist Party of England and Wales is really not the organization for me if I am honest with myself. Also discovering recently how much SPEW are influenced by Leon Trotsky makes me have doubts anyway as I know sod all about Trotskyism. Keen to learn and discuss theory. Really curious about SPGB plus Trade Union History, Marxism and Anarchism in general. Hope I get a reply to this comment.

Hello ultraviolet thank you for your kind words. I was a member of Unison for five years until I got fed up of Unison being just an extension of Labour Party. There is the historical problem of because of Unison affiliation to Labour strikes at Labour run coucils by local Unison members have been discouraged by Unison officials. I think there should be leaderless trade unions. I have reached the conclusion that I need to look at Socialism by changing the lens of SPEW I was looking at capitalism through and look at Socialism through other perspective such as SolFed, Anarchist Federation, Class War and last but never least SPGB. At moment researching on Trotskyism and Bolshevism not because I believe in those concept but to truly understand what Trotskyism and Bolshevism really is as I have no idea and importantly why anarchist and anti bolshevik socialists such as SPGB dislike them.

Hi there comrade and other folk,

I'm a middle aged class struggle anarchist 'nutter' from Finland. I used to be active during 1987 to 1996 and droped political work and had other things in my life consuming all of my time and strengh. I get interested in anarchist scene and involved with some militants some five years ago. I 'm a bit confused by the new fashionable form of individualist anarchism favoured by the younger comrades here in Finland - this insurrectionalist tendency just don't make much sense to me - but maybe I'm just old :)

Hi,

I'm first and foremost a Christian, I don't know if I would Call myself an Anarchist, my thoughts are a little bit more complicated. I used to basically think of myself of a more or less a-political basic social-democrat. I recently started Reading David Graeber and Marcell Mauss and some other anthropology for a study I was doing in early Christian history/New Testament Exegesis in regards to Acts 2:42-47 and Acts 4:32-37 (the idea being that a historical reconstruction that starts from the point of social relationships rather than property institutions can make sense of the early Christian "communism" a whole lot better).

The more of David Graeber I read, the more I think he's definately on to something. So I don't know if I'm an anarchist or not, but I do know is I am 100% opposed to Capitalism, as both an ideology and a set of institutions, and that I don't think the state should be the way to oppose it, and I have a generally Christian worldview and theology has a big say in how I approach these issues.

Beyond that I'm still working on the Socratic injunction to "know myself".

So, I created this account six years ago and then drifted away from politics of any kind for personal reasons. But personal experiences and world events have all been pushing me back in.

When I left off I was, or was trying to be, as dogmatically Marxist as they come. Not sure how much of that I've retained in the transition from being an angry teenager to an angry 20 something. I haven't read a word of Marx in probably two or three years, so I probably need to get back on that.

I used to post a lot on Revleft. Still have an account there, but the forums look like a ghost town now.

I'm autistic so if I'm needlessly pedantic about things just tell me to shut up.

Hello Libcom

I've been lurking a while and have learnt stuff here. There is plenty I don't get so be sure I will be asking some daft questions and asserting some stupid crap along the way. Of course things get heated but I very much like that mostly people here tend towards engaging in a more meaningful way (and sometimes even changing their position!) than most other leftist and liberal sites I have seen.

I fancy diving in with a topic that is highly contentious here: veganism. I have just read some vegan talk here and in particular found this thread surprising and not informative. Perhaps there is a bit of previous on this subject that a new reader cannot know about. I found the non vegan arguments left me with more questions than answers. I doubt I will be convinced to eat animals or anything but I do think I am open enough to have my political view of it changed. So, are you all OK with me starting a thread trying to find out more about why the politics of veganism is so derided here?

BTW I am not joining up to just talk about veganism. Far from it. I have been lurking here a long while before I even saw the vegan threads today.

Hi, been reading articles and getting information from here for a long time. I'm an anarchist communist. I have learned leftbook is a toxic cesspool but I do not like being cut off from any leftist discussion. I tried to consider MLs to be comrades, I really really did but they simply aren't. And the excessive demand that they are is almost always pushed by them to become dominant. I have met many MLs, ones I was told were good, but they just keep disappointing me, they never admit Lenin killed innocent people, hell they say he wasn't tough enough against dissent. And I don't think that is dogmatic to think it is unacceptable. So I dusted off my old profile and came here where I feel "the kulaks (decided by Stalin) deserved it" is not allowed.

Hello,

I am a communications worker who began their foray into leftism and libertarian thinking when I was 13, finding the Communist Manifesto at a Library, as well as discovering punk rock music that espoused the more misguided, simple version of anarchism that was so popular among late 70s, 80s mainstay punk groups. I have only really evolved more fully in my political thinking in the last couple years after discovering Kropotkin. I would like to live in a world where my wife and I may grow food, help our neighbors and comrades, build a community based on horizontal organization and direct democracy, and live in harmony with the forces of nature to which we are spiritually "bound". I look forward to speaking with all of the comrades here extensively.

I'm a market anarchist or individualist anarchist, of the sort one might find at the Center for a Stateless Society. I'm not sure yet if "my kind" is welcome here, or if the forum is strictly for people who identify as "communists?" I thought I would go ahead and ask and see, though.

Other than that, I'm a wage-worker slowly trying to shift to self-employment, and looking for avenues to engage in activism and help others become as free as is possible. I also read a lot and write computer software, but only as hobbies at the moment.

Hiya! The quality of political discussion on this forum is so high, it's kind of intimidating. But I'd like to jump in and join the conversation.

We're in a period of such low class-struggle, with so few people really questioning capitalism or the state, and it's easy to feel pessimistic. But for some reason I still have faith we'll pull through. Well, most of the time I do.

I've not really been involved in class-struggle, aside from a bit of strike support here and there. It's something I'd like to do... but I have very intense anxiety issues. I have such a strong, deep desire to get involved and it can be very frustrating to feel held back. In the future I definitely want to become involved, though, once I take care of the anxiety and its causes.

I feel our politics are so beautiful; they hold a vision of the world as it could be, something that could make life fantastic for everyone.

So I'm very happy to be here with all of you.

Hi, I'm new and just made an account here - actually I made an earlier account recently but I forgot the password, I'm not exactly of the same political viewpoints as the majority of this board, particularly the anarchists, but I still would like to contribute to discussion here. I'm a communist primarily because I don't believe that a market economy is a reasonable system of commodity management and exchange for future societies, and it saddens me that our growing global interconnectivity via mediums such as the internet and world transport has only watered the trough of the most vile of cult-o-path Ayn-Randesque Libertarians, of Dara Khosrowshahi, Ross Ulbricht and Martin Shkreli fame.

Are the days of dreams of digital marxism and cross-border peer networks to build international solidarities and an indomitable world socialist movement long gone, just at the time the majority of the third world has began to gain access to the datascape?

As more than 90 million Nigerians now trot the web, not a single socialist of note dares to reach out to the choked labour movement in this rapidly industrialising African nation. As explosions of online social and political bloggers over the past ~10 years in Southern Asia, many of them speaking out against corruption theocracy and cultural backwardsness, many of them strong left like us, are been violently suppressed by their governments and religious and social extremists, they are cut off and isolated, separated from an insulated Western left, largely ignorant of their history and their struggles.

Indeed it is ironically the people least inclined to international co-operation who appear to be pioneering this co-operative cross-border digital social revolution, the sadomasochistic, manic-depressive frog-meme vomiting pustulous seas of isolationist, nativist and ethno-supremacist groups who have, bizarrely, united across borders in pursuit of the common goal of shuttering each other away, with the added serving of feeding all feminists, arabs or other unwantables they uncover to a gnashing spikey trash compactor. The same can be said in the Third World of the ridiculously well-organised islamist social and youth movements, operating like a youth-group-missionary-mafia hybrid and violently batting away any socialists or religious critics who compete with them for public approval. I feel like many on the left do not have an answer to this, and that it lies within our own ability to outreach digitally to our comrades in other countries all over the world.

Also, finishing words but I hate the term "leftist" being thrown around nowadays (or at least I believe it to be nowadays because I sure don't have a good memory of the phrase being so commonplace until a few years back). It really irks me, because, well, do you see people getting labelled as "rightists" at all in the daily press? Oh no, no, no. Apparently one entire half of the political spectrum is now considered to be a generalised paste of some extreme madman's ideology. I recently read an article in The Guardian who labelled the completely different Greek SYRIZA and the stalinist KKE as piecemeal "Leftist" groups in the same breath, who in another article (albeit, to be fair, with a different author) then went on to paint Corbyn and then Trudeau with the exact same nonsense-label! Elevating a wing of the political spectrum to a faux-ideology, It stinks of a 21st century Hooverism, and I reject utterly it's contemporary use within the English language - not out of political correctness but of terminological accuracy.

tl;dr Hi nice to meet you we're too isolated also fuck Ron Paul and Zekir Neik.

Hello comrades, I've been coming here for reading material and recommending this site to people for like, ten years, but never really fancied signing up or getting into forum discussions - a combination of laziness and the knowledge that I spend far too much time dicking about online as it is

I'm signing up here for two reasons - firstly to hopefully get some opinions and discussion around the stuff I'm researching at the moment, namely anarchism in German speaking Europe circa 1870 - 1930, and its relationship to stuff like sexual liberation, psychoanalysis, art etc - and secondly just because I want to start contributing to this site, both financially when I can, and in uploading texts. It's really fucking great at the end of the day, I feel like I owe a lot to the existence of this place, particularly the library - so I feel like making an effort to contribute is long overdue. Cheers!

Hello I'm Shikantaza, I'm a 20-something PhD student from the UK. My politics were always liberal until a couple of years ago when Corbyn got elected to the labour leadership. Since then my frustrations with the PLP's resistance to democratic reform has led me to explore left-wing thought more generally. I'm trying to keep an open mind at the moment, I've read some Marx and Kropotkin. At this stage I think I am more reformist than revolutionary due to the risk of a revolution being coopted by an elite seeking to keep power for themselves. Just hoping to learn more from being here.

I found this site because "Full text of The Dispossessed at Libcom.org" was listed as the first external link at the bottom of the Wikipedia article on the same title. Curiously enough, if I type the title in LibCom's search box, it doesn't come up, though it's accessible other ways. Someone who knows how might want to look into that bug.

Hi everyone, I'm a college student from the US. I'm mainly here because I have recently begun to question every political belief I held. I have no idea where I stand on anything anymore and I'm trying to learn about as many ideologies as possible. I thought I was a libertarian until I took an economics class and realized how unsustainable free market economies are. That led me to question my beliefs on other topics as well. I hope being here will help me to learn about points of view that I haven't explored yet.

Welcome. "Libertarian" in america (where its meaning has been distorted by right-wingers) has nothing to do with its actual and historical meaning (especially outside North America); it's basically a short way of saying one who's an anarchist and a socialist. So the libertarian in libcom has nothing to do with "free markets" etc. And university social science courses (in my experience) are always conservative and biased toward capitalism (or a modified capitalism), so you won't really learn much there.

Hello!
Swedish railroad worker here that found this forum, somehow, when reading about Railroad Workers United. Autonomous syndicalist union organizing in a country where union activity is so smothered by reformist “social democracy” (nowadays its not social nor democratic) has its challenges, and I find what RWU is doing as interesting. Among other aspects, as a way of reaching workers that are swallowed up by the bureaucracy of the trade unions, these so-called organizations, who more or less resembles insurance companies/institutions today, are actually helping out in this process by being yellow (acting on behalf of the employer) in some cases.
By seeking examples of successful organizing, or attempts thereof, I found this forum and figured it was a good idea to join.

Hello, I'm Sara.

I originally became political though the peace movement, environmentalism, Thatcher, anti racism etc. I'm instinctively anarchist in my response to any form of hierarchy or oppression. Gradually, on the basis that, if you can't change the world, change yourself, I drifted towards philosophy, psychology and spirituality. Nothing in mainstream politics has represented any of my views for over thirty years, and it seemed obvious that the neoliberal consensus was a stitch up.

The emergence of Corbyn reawakened my interest, as it seems to have done for many others of my generation on the left. If nothing else, his leadership of Labour has highlighted the machinations of the establishment in their attempts to discredit him. He also seems to have placed the question of democracy back on the agenda, as has Brexit. At least people are talking seriously about politics again. I joined Labour and Momentum out of fear that this little spark might be put out too soon, but beginning to think politically again has made me realise that the problems we face are more fundamental than anything which is likely to be achieved through the representative system, or the most well intentioned reformism.

I'm currently trying to educate myself in libertarian thought and history, to clarify my own thinking and to see if there's anything I can usefully do. I came across this website in the course of this process, and have found it very interesting so far. If you can't change yourself, change the world...

Hi all,
I found this site on twitter sometime last year or 2017. I think it was a critique of Corbyn (of course), which I initially dismissed but then I did that thing where you read the whole article. And I actually agreed with it.
I've always been left leaning politics wise and during university one of my friends was chair of the Marxist society. However, that society was mostly M-L leaning which I didn't really fit into because I am very skeptical about the state ever being this machine for good without exploiting people further. I had also watched videos of Professor Wolff who argues that the USSR et al are simply state capitalism which made complete sense to me.
Libertarian communism appealed greatly to me as cooperation and community are fundamental to human society in my opinion. I am now making my way through the Conquest of Bread and I greatly appreciate suggestions to further reading, however, I am not a strong reader.
I'm here to learn, especially about the applications of lib-com to the world, meet new people and have fun!
Thanks

Hi, I am an undergraduate student at the University of Exeter, currently doing a dissertation on women within the punk subculture of the 1970s/80s in England. For my project I am hoping to interview anyone who classed themselves as a punk within this period. I would be especially interested in women interviewees as they are what my project is based around however would be very grateful for anyone who was involved within the subculture's insights.
I am hoping to do these interviews in person within Exeter however realise this may not be possible so would also be happy to do them over Skype. Furthermore if people do not feel comfortable doing this but would still be open to sharing their experiences I can email over some questions for you to fill out.
If anyone is interesting in being interviewed or would like to find out more please email me at [email protected].

Hi,
I found this place as a result of doing research for a podcast that I host. The premise of the podcast is to examine things from an unconventional open minded perspective. In other words, the premise of the podcast is to challenge the 'conventional wisdom' on a wide variety of issues. So, I came here to learn more about anarchy, and in particular about anarcho communism. What do I need to do to be able to ask a question/post on one of the other forums. I have a lot of questions.
My podcast is not "up and running" yet, I have about a dozen episodes recorded but I dont have the web infrastructure in place and also I want to have a sizable backlog of episodes before I launch because part of the year I am working long hours (80-100/week) and I wont have time to record new episodes. I only mention this to get out in front of people wanting to listen to my podcast. Not yet!

Blake Williams

1. Go to google

2. type whatever search terms you want

3. after the search terms, add a space and then type

This will ensure you search only within this website, rather than the whole www

Press enter as normal and voila.

Welcome all

Hi, I am a software developer living in the United States. I am interested in learning and discussing anarchist theory but not very active.

Mostly a UK site but I like the discussion and library. I've always thought UK people have it better than us yanks activity-wise since there's a socialist (for whatever they're worth) within walking-distance usually wherever you are, whereas here you can go hundreds of miles without finding any like-minded people
