Oh, and I know this is technically Teesside antifascist history rather than Tyneside anarchism, but I've seen there's a push to commemorate the memory of the Battle of Stockton recently - no idea if there were any anarchos in Stockton at the time, but if there were I'm sure they would've been getting stuck in.

Rival to the silver bands, some well known, were the bazooka bands, the “bazooka” [kazoo] being a sixpenny instrument one hummed into. About 40 of these, with drums made quite a noise. All the bands – there must have been a few hundred of them in the country, including children’s bands – were in costume, a condition being that the costume should not cost a great deal. Sometimes 20 bands would take part in a local carnival, tramping miles to the site. I recall one fat man who, dressed as a sultan in the remains of a bedspread, marched at the head of his “harem” of 40 women, a very proud sultan he looked, and the “Tramps”, each wearing a battered bowler and spats, who played their tune, then sang, “We’re on the road to anywhere” like a choir. There were bands of Zulu warriors, Red Indians, knights in tincan armour, battalions of Fred Karno’s Army, bands of mermaids (the most difficult of the lot) and of pirates (the easiest).

Thanks for that tyneside anarchist. I first met Ewan through the student movement, likewise he then became a dear friend of mine. I'll miss him, as will many others.
Anyone know anything about Yankee Jim Roberts, former Wobbly and "Geordie miner" but possibly originally from Kentucky? He's mentioned in P. Wood's book about the folk-singing Elliott mining family of Birtley as being a friend of theirs and a political influence. According to the book he'd returned to the UK after he'd "been chased out of the USA for his politics" and worked alongside the Elliotts at the local pit.
Two bits of great news. Firstly we have been given a double CD of the interview, and the radio slots that local labour historian Ray Challinor did with Tom Brown during the early 1970’s. I must admit, after searching for info etc on Tom Brown for next to 30 years, that it was quite a moment to actually hear him speaking. The booming voice of the Tyneside shipyards, now 70 odd years old with a frail old voice, but not without his passion for the ‘struggle’. After contemplation, we have decided to give these to the Kate Sharpley Library for possible audio on-line release, so keep an eye out for that.

Issues 9 (September 1986) to 12 (February 1987) of Tyneside Syndicalist. As ever the download link / PDF,s are below picture. Issue 9 has a special feature on the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, whilst Issue 12 is a landmark issue as the paper eventually had a name change from being ‘The Syndicalist’ to becoming ‘Tyneside Syndicalist’.
And…as a matter of ‘historical regional trivia’ ! a small group of us in Gateshead used to regularly sell a small amount of each issue (10-15 or so) alongside Class War etc, not very successfully at times, yet there was a notable increase when the name change occurred….
They say all good things come to an end, and so it is with The Tyneside Syndicalist. After Issue 16, it was decided at a readers meeting to put the paper ‘on ice’ for the time being, lack of finances, burnout, and new projects beckoning all contributed (read more in our forthcoming history). Unfortunately, the ice never melted and the paper was never again produced.
Issue 13 – March 1987, Issue 14 – May 1987 has a May Day supplement, Issue 15 – June / July 1987 is the pictured (and my favorite cover), whilst the final Issue 16 – Winter 1987 contains a special supplement commemorating (or commiserating the failings and authoritarian result of much of …) the 70th anniversary of the Russian Revolution.

Pretty sure it must be 2008 - looking at the back page listings, says "2008 is its 4th year" about Projectile and mentions that there's a 2008 Wor Diary with "more to come in 2009".

Issues 9 (September 1986) to 12 (February 1987) of Tyneside Syndicalist. As ever the download link / PDF,s are below picture. Issue 9 has a special feature on the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, whilst Issue 12 is a landmark issue as the paper eventually had a name change from being ‘The Syndicalist’ to becoming ‘Tyneside Syndicalist’.
And…as a matter of ‘historical regional trivia’ ! a small group of us in Gateshead used to regularly sell a small amount of each issue (10-15 or so) alongside Class War etc, not very successfully at times, yet there was a notable increase when the name change occurred….

They say all good things come to an end, and so it is with The Tyneside Syndicalist. After Issue 16, it was decided at a readers meeting to put the paper ‘on ice’ for the time being, lack of finances, burnout, and new projects beckoning all contributed (read more in our forthcoming history). Unfortunately, the ice never melted and the paper was never again produced.
Issue 13 – March 1987, Issue 14 – May 1987 has a May Day supplement, Issue 15 – June / July 1987 is the pictured (and my favorite cover), whilst the final Issue 16 – Winter 1987 contains a special supplement commemorating (or commiserating the failings and authoritarian result of much of …) the 70th anniversary of the Russian Revolution.

"Sad to hear of the death this morning of Nigel Todd. I first met Nigel whilst doing a free 'Trade union + labour studies' course early 90,s where he taught the history section of the course. Upon hearing of my anarchism he keenly sent me his books for free (pictured).
